THE TITANIC – THE TITANIC DEPARTURE canvas giclee is a great example of James Lumbers nostalgic style of artwork. Best known for his nostalgic artwork, Lumbers is also an legendary portrait and wildlife artist. Once graduating from The Ontario College of Art, Lumbers worked for a number of years in Toronto. In 1969 an opportunity came to journey to the far north to paint polar bears in their normal habitat with a group of scientists. In the following 10 years, his theme matter proliferated to documenting Native Peoples of the North. This composition was shown in 2 shows at the Royal Ontario Museum.
In 1973 he was nominated a Fellow of the Explorers Club of New York and he also became a member of the Society of Animal Artists of New York. He is listed in Who’s Who in American Art and a Dictionary of International Biographies in the UK.

By the late 70′s Lumbers was acknowledged as one of Canada’s leading realists Painters, participating in many exhibitions in Canada and the United States. He is also distingished as a portrait painter, having painted various sports superstars, political and creative  achievers and others of character. His work is included in several collections in Canada and around the world.

THE TITANIC – TITANIC DEPARTURE limited edition is a great illustration of James Lumbers nostalgic style of artwork. His technique of painting produced international recognition to Lumbers. It all began on an island in Georgian Bay. Having sketched the veranda of an abandoned house, he found a diary with old photographs beneath a floorboard. The diary described the images taken in 1913 from the similar position as the sketch was completed. Later on turned into a painting, it appeared valid to supplement the people as ghostly figures of ancient times with the terrace of the current day. This painting evolved into a career that has spanned over 35 years creating “Moments in Time”. Lumbers strong sense of Canadian History is mirrored in much of his artwork. TITANIC DEPARTURE limited edition is a new release for the Titanic 100th Aniversary.

The History of Hockey Collection by James Lumbers

The History of Hockey Collection - James Lumbers

The History of Hockey Collection - James Lumbers

“ The History of Hockey Collection” is a new series of 6 paintings, by James Lumbers which deal with the traditions and history of hockey players and fans that have become such an integral part of our society. The focus is not just on the great stars of the game, but rather what motivates us to understand and learn about teamwork while instilling the thought that one day, given the determination, a few might become the next Wayne Gretzky or Sidney Crosby.

Renowned Canadian artists James Lumbers, has developed a strong sense of history and this is reflected in much of his paintings and in this hockey limited edition print collection. Lumbers’ whispers, “We are products of our memories and traditions.  We must fight in our own way to preserve what we have.

“The History of Hockey Collection “currently consists of  5 limited edition signed and numbered giclee prints; “Where Dreams Are Born”, “The Hockey Scout”, “The Goalie Mask”, “Saturday Night Hockey” and “The Olympic Gold” the newest release from the series which recaptures Sidney Crosby’s Golden Goal for team Canada against team USA. The final painting of the collection will be released sometime in 2013.

James Lumbers is one of Canada’s most respected and successful artists. His wilderness landscapes, nostalgic images of Canada’s pasts, and inspiring portraits are part of private art and print collections around the world. Born in Toronto in 1929, and a graduate of the Ontario College of Art, James Lumbers worked an expedition to Canada’s far north. The experience changed his life. Relying on ghost images, the artist carefully blends reflections of the past into renditions of the present to create thought-provoking tributes of simpler times long gone. Lumbers’ has had numerous TV and radio appearances and exhibitions in Canada & United States. Internationally recognized as a painter of memories, James is most recognized for the ghosting effect that we are all familiar with which started on a summer afternoon in 1976.

Lumbers said “Some years ago when doing research for a painting of Wayne Gretzky, His father Walter showed me where Wayne took his first steps on a rink in their backyard. There was no acclaim at that time, just a little boy who loved to skate. The same was true for Gordie Howe as I discovered when doing research for his portrait. Their greatness and that of others came through love and devotion for the game.

These experiences helped create the idea of doing a series of six paintings representing young people and their dreams of aspiring to one of the original six teams in the NHL and representing their respective Olympic hockey team; Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Detroit red Wings, New York Rangers, Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks and Canada`s Olympic team. Lumbers believe that we all need to be reminded now and then that things are possible if you put enough effort into anything!

At a time when ever-increasing competition is reaching for consumer`s money, “The History of Hockey Collection” giclee prints are in high demand. This collection can be purchased at www.miroarts.com and at select art galleries. A few of these limited edition prints are sold out and can only be purchased in the secondary art market. James Lumbers has created 5 of the collection of six and will be releasing the final painting in 2013.

“The Olympic Gold” is the fifth and newest painting from the “The History of Hockey Collection” by James Lumbers . It recaptures Sidney Crosby`s Golden Goal in the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics.

If you’re a hockey fan, “The History of Hockey Collection” is then a must to add to your collection of great hockey limited edition prints.

“The Olympic Gold” – Canadian Hockey Thoughts from James Lumbers

James Lumbers

James Lumbers-Famous Canadian painter

It could be argued that nothing captures the imagination of our country as hockey does.   It reaches every segment of society and appeals to both men and women. Canadian hockey is a game for all who want to participate or just watch no matter whether they are young or old it’s deeply ingrained as part of our Canadian culture.

It’s not just the hockey game, it’s the memory that remains when the game has finished. Memories are those spiritual connections that inspire our latent emotions. They are reinforced when looking at a hockey painting documenting that particular moment like a door opening in your mind.

Through the years each generation has produced a star that is or was outstanding in the game of hockey . Many remember when Paul Henderson scored the winning goal against Russia. In every era people like Gordie HoweWayne Gretzky and now Sidney Crosby along with many other players have contributed to making hockey the great game that it is. It was a magic moment when Crosby scored the winning goal against the USA in the 2010 Olympics. They were worthy competitors who made winning the gold for Canada all the more rewarding. The institution of hockey lives in the hearts of all who enjoy the game.

Where Dreams Are Born by James Lumbers

More than a tradition, hockey is a cornerstone in our culture that often transcends almost everything else for people from all walks of life. In this painting, I have portrayed a group of youngsters playing on a frozen pond trying to get that last goal before they have to go home for supper.

Two of the greatest rivals in hockey were Montreal and Toronto; here they look down symbolically at the next generation of young hopefuls. Maple Leaf Gardens and the Forum still aglow with emotional memories in the sunset remind us of the places where hopes were dashed and dreams came true.

Saturday Night Hockey by James Lumbers – Hockey Night In Canada

“Saturday Night Hockey” Limited Edition by James Lumbers

“The History of Hockey Collection”

Saturday Night Hockey by James Lumbers - Hockey Night In Canada

Saturday night hockey became a tradition over the years, thanks in part to people like Foster Hewitt who pioneered early hockey broadcasts on the radio. “He shoots, he scores” became his trademark phrase. Through the years like Gordie Howe, Bobby Orr, Gerry Cheevers, Billy Harris,(shown here) and numerous others became household names thanks to those broadcasts.

Today watching hockey with a choice of multiple media anywhere anytime, has helped to make hockey one of the cultural cornerstones of our society. When it became possible to see players like Steve Yzerman, Joe Thornton and now present players plying their skills on the ice, hockey became all the more real. Don Cherry, a recognized spokesman for hockey today contributes his colourful expression to the spirit of the game at home and on the ice.

The Hockey Scout by James Lumbers - NHL Hockey Scouts

Anyone who grew up in a winter climate can probably remember playing hockey on a rink near the house. One day as the fellows were playing a car pulled up and a couple of men got out and were watching as the boys played. Talking to each other, they made notes and then later asked the boys for their names. The men were scouts from a couple of the farm clubs looking for potential players.

The boys were thrilled beyond words, knowing that they were being considered for greater things. Two of the boys were eventually signed up to play for farm teams. Hard work and devotion to the sport would be needed to become part of the greatest league of all, and then one day it happened!

The Goalie Mask by James Lumbers

“The Goalie Mask” Limited Edition by James Lumbers

“The History of Hockey Collection”

The Goalie Mask by James Lumbers - Famous NHL Goalie Masks

The goalie mask was introduced into the NHL by Jacques Plante in a game with the Rangers on November 1, 1959 after receiving an injury to his bare face. Over the protest of coach Toe Blake, he finished the game wearing his mask.

This painting by artist James Lumbers shows some of the evolution in masks that took place over the years. The Sawchuk mask followed after the Plante example and was used by several goaltenders. Goalies added their individual personalities to their masks as time passed. Gerry Cheevers displayed all the cuts and stitches he received on his mask. Tony Esposito had his personally shaped mask. Jim Rutherford was one of the first to display the graphics of his team on his mask. Mike Palmateer’s mask was changed to give more protection to the neck. Ken Dryden chose graphics on his mask for visibility.

Patrick Roy wore a mask that had evolved into today’s style offering good protection against flying pucks and better neck protection. Today, there is no limit to the variety of graphics on Goalie Masks while each player makes his personal statement.
